Nothing Is Ever Truly Correct: Reframing AI, Consent, and Human Struggle

Nothing is ever truly correct; it is only statistically probable. The length of a ruler changes depending on what you use to measure it. Give ten people ten different measurement tools and you’ll get ten different lengths, with each being technically valid. In actuality, there’s an infinite number of correct lengths a ruler can be. Nothing is ever really true or absolute, especially when weighing the positives and negatives of an idea. This way of thinking, where right and wrong are not binary, but part of an ever-sliding scale, has restructured how I perceive complex issues like artificial intelligence and bodily autonomy, particularly as portrayed in Octavia Butler’s speculative fiction.

Both Butler’s Lilith’s Brood and the ongoing conversation around AI reveal the danger of moral absolutism. In Butler’s world, bodies are transformed for survival, sometimes without consent. In our world, minds are transformed by tools like AI, sometimes without resistance. At first glance, these transformations can feel threatening. But what if, instead of fearing these changes, we looked at them through a lens of curiosity, ambiguity, and possibility?

In Butler’s Dawn, the rejection of Jodahs and its siblings by humans, stands as a metaphor for how society responds to the unfamiliar or different. Jodahs, who is intersex and genetically part alien, is feared not because it has done harm, but because of what it represents: ambiguity, change, and the loss of control. Its body is not accepted by the humans who cling to binary gender roles and traditional human biology. Jodahs becomes the subject of bodily dysmorphia, not due to an internal confusion, but because of external rejection. As I battled with in my earlier essay, the disturbing question that defined my mental struggle was whether it is acceptable to remove someone’s choices even if you think you know what is best for them. Butler doesn’t answer this question cleanly, but she does force us to reckon with its complexity.

Lilith, too, undergoes violation disguised as salvation. She is kidnapped, repeatedly put to sleep and reawakened without her consent, forced into leadership, and eventually pressured into a cross-species relationship. The Oankali rationalize their actions as being for the good of humanity. This isn’t unlike how governments or corporations rationalize invasive data collection or surveillance, they tell us it’s for our own safety, for better service, or for optimization. The logic is disturbingly similar. Yet, as noted in my reflection, “Butler’s ability to show that the Oankali are creatures with different abilities and considerations… had me fully convinced they made the right decision.” This self-awareness that persuades the reader against their instincts, demonstrates how effective Butler is at flipping our sentiments on their head. And that’s where the power lies. In showing us how easily our moral compass can be manipulated under the guise of progress, safety, or logic, Butler prepares us to critically analyze our own world.

When I first encountered widespread AI tools like ChatGPT, my instinctual response mirrored the fear that haunts Butler’s humans: loss of autonomy, the erosion of individual agency, and a sense that something was being done to us rather than with us. However, much like Lilith’s evolving perception of the Oankali, my perspective on AI has changed over time. Through using AI, hearing peers discuss their experiences, and watching the technology evolve, I now understand its promise more clearly, and its risks more precisely. As argued in my original AI essay, artificial intelligence is neither inherently good nor bad; “it is neutral in itself… There are both positive and negative aspects to consider.” AI’s neutrality, however, doesn’t excuse us from responsibility. We shape its outcomes, much like the Oankali shape the future of humanity through choices that blend knowledge with ethics, and power with vulnerability.

AI’s most immediate benefit is its accessibility. For neurodivergent individuals, it can be life-changing. People with ADHD have reported doubling their productivity thanks to AI’s ability to help them organize thoughts, prepare for conversations, and manage time. This is not unlike the Oankali’s use of genetic tools to ‘enhance’ humanity, it’s a tool used to augment human capacity, to enable rather than replace. When I wrote about Ross, a person who uses AI to mask their neurodivergence, I highlighted one of AI’s greatest strengths: its capacity to accommodate differences that society has historically ignored or punished.

Similarly, the use of AI in medical diagnostics, especially for conditions poorly represented in standard datasets, such as dermatological conditions on dark skin, echoes the Oankali’s mission to preserve and improve life. The Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology reports that only about 10.3% of printed dermatological images represent dark skin tones, compared to over 28% in AI-powered online resources. AI has begun to correct this imbalance, filling a void left by traditional institutions. This is transformation not as erasure, but as repair.

Still, optimism has its limits. Just as the Oankali’s interventions led to a loss of human agency, overreliance on AI threatens to erode the intellectual struggles that foster learning and growth. This captures the paradox of optimization: the more efficient a tool becomes, the more tempting it is to surrender to it entirely. But growth is forged in struggle. In education, in creativity, and in relationships, our deepest developments come from challenge—not shortcuts. If AI becomes the default route to every answer, we risk dulling the edge of human thought. It’s the same fear Butler articulates when she strips humans of their choices in favor of survival. The question is not whether we can make things easier, but whether we should, and what we lose when we do.

Ultimately, what both Butler’s fiction and real-world AI demonstrate is the fallacy of binary thinking. As previously noted, nothing is really bad and nothing is really good in its entirety. This nuanced stance is crucial when engaging with large-scale transformations, whether technological or biological. Jodahs is not a monster. The Oankali are not saviors. AI is not the enemy. And humanity is not the hero. In this world of infinite “correct” answers, the goal isn’t certainty, it’s adaptability. Butler’s work teaches us that discomfort is not a signal to flee, but a signal to think. Similarly, AI’s emergence into our lives is not a death knell for humanity’s value, but a challenge for us to reassert that value in new ways.

Rather than asking whether AI will ‘take over,’ perhaps the more pressing question is: will we let it? Will we become like the humans in Dawn, paralyzed by our loss of power and unwilling to adapt? Or will we be like Lilith, who learns to navigate the in-between space, not because she agrees, but because she understands the stakes?

Butler has done so well in predicting issues that arise, I see my worries now on discrimination validated. However, this is also a positive because it gives us a space to provoke and consider our own thought processes. AI does the same. It stirs worry, but also reflection. It provokes, but also supports. To move forward, we must let go of the need for absolute judgments. We must embrace the ambiguity. Just as the ruler changes length based on the tool, our perspectives change based on the questions we dare to ask. This is not a flaw, it’s our greatest strength. The ability to question, adapt, and imagine a better path, even when the answers are uncertain, is what makes us human.

Is Consent Specific To Species?

Consent is taught as a basic right, and of course it should be, but do you ask your dog if it is ok with getting a haircut? Or do you get consent from your cat before trimming its nails? Usually not. We rationalize this by saying that these actions are taken for the benefit of the animal, and thus we do not need its agreeance to follow-through. In Octavia Butler’s Dawn, the line of consent is debated through the addition of cultures and physical attributes that are not our own. What made me unsettled while reading, was Butler’s ability to convince me to disregard my own taught rules outlining consent, in favor of agreeing with the Oankali, the aliens that took over the human race. She did this by presenting a series of situations all of which seemed to lead to a symbiotic relationship between the Oankali and the humans, the extracting of the humans from a dying earth and the mind-reading the Oankali are able to perform. In these situations, the Oanklali either did not ask the humans for consent or ignore their pleas entirely and act anyway. The disturbing part is that the rationality behind why the Oankali do this convinced me as a reader to agree with them.

Lilith, Butler’s main character, describes her early time on the ship as repeatedly being Awakened, and put to sleep, without her consent or knowledge. This is coupled with the idea that she was taken off of earth without her knowledge and brought to a glorified prison cell, where she spent weeks of “Awakened” time. She learns that the Oankali have a use for her, and she has no choice but to do what they need done. “You’ll Awaken a small group of humans, all English-speaking, and help them learn to deal with us” (34). My immediate reaction as a reader is to be horrified that this is happening to her and accuse her captors of not doing the morally right thing, even though they continuously say that this is for the good of her people. After she begins to get more comfortable around the Oankali through being forced to share a space with them, Lilith, and the readers, learn more about the situation and the Oankali’s abilities. We find out that several hundred humans were found on earth, still alive, the Oankali found them and took them into their care to look after them, so they can “mate”, exchanging genes between the humans and Oankali, and allowing for better survival of both. Butler’s explanation of the Oankali’s abilities, especially what was necessary to keep them alive, and their motivations behind saving and sustaining the humans, fully convinced me that they made the right decision and that the humans should be grateful for them. This is concerning when I took a step back and looked at my own views of the situation because how could I accept this? The lack of independence and decision-making that the Oankali left for Lilith could be considered a complete dictatorship in which no one gets to make a decision for themselves. However, Butler’s ability to show that the Oankali are creatures with different abilities and considerations and truly are just working for the benefit of both themselves and the humans, had me fully convinced that they made the right decision in taking Lilith off of her planet and into their ship.

Another debate that I encountered when discussing this novel was triggered by a scene that occurred in the book, after other humans have been Awakened where Lilith and her boyfriend, Joseph, interacted with Nikanj, Lilith’s mate Oankali. We had already found out that the Oankali have polygamous relationships, especially with humans, and are able to initiate deep feelings of pleasure with their human partners. Nikanj came to Lilith and Joseph’s room and initiated a sexual encounter between all three of them. Lilith was already very accustomed to this situation because she had been awake and living with the Oankali for years at this point, and her relationship with Nikanj had grown to place where she felt comfortable doing this. Joseph, had just met Nikanj and was very unsure of the Oankali, leading him to directly tell it no. Nikanj ignores Joseph’s words and continues on, using its abilities to manipulate Joseph into place and to perform the sexual act, “When he would have backed away, it held him. It managed to lie down on the bed with him without seeming to force him down. “You see. Your body has made a different choice””(214). I immediately saw this as a direct non-consensual act and thus vilified Nikanj in this situation, but Butler had explained that Oolai, the type of Oankali Nikanj is, can read human minds and emotions, and although it had ignored Joseph’s verbal pleas, it had listened to his emotional and physical reactions of “yes” and so it had carried on. My agreement with the acceptability of this situation is nerve-wracking because it opens up the possibility of many other situations where this ‘emotional reading’ would not be as welcome. Verbal consent allows for people to make their own decisions, and taking this away means there is even more lack of choice in this universe. While considering all the things mind-reading would change, lying was one I got stuck on. One of the goals Lilith had in the past was to try and catch an Oankali in a lie, because they never seemed to be anything but honest and if they did not want to tell her something, they just would not answer. The Oankali’s mental abilities have completely erased the possibly to successfully lie in their society. Again, I found myself thinking that this would be great to have in our world. Lying is already viewed as something not acceptable to do, and isn’t denying yourself pleasure for moral reasons or fear just another act of lying to yourself? A scary train of thought when considering that the privacy of your own thoughts would be threatened at any given moment.

The disturbing question that defined my mental struggle caused by the situations in Butler’s novel was, “is it acceptable to take away a person’s choice for the idea of knowing what is best for them?”. Where is the line between forcibly taking care of someone or letting them make poor decisions for themselves? I do not have an answer, but I am sure Butler will have me continuing to ponder this throughout her series.

Balancing Morals and Innovation

Is AI good or bad for humanity? “AI, like many technologies, is neutral in itself. Whether it’s “good” or “bad” for humanity depends on how it’s used, developed, and managed. There are both positive and negative aspects to consider…”, a response written by ChatGBT. Although it is unlikely AI would ever admit that it would have a negative overall impact on society, it is correct when stating that you cannot generalize so easily. When focused on the scientific aspect, artificial intelligence has been able to supplement life in so many ways, including increased accessibility and diversity in technological and medical fields, most of which are continuing to evolve to help more of society, however this does not speak to its entire presence.

AI has been rapidly implemented throughout our lives, in ways that are both unexpected, and scary. Luckily, with technological advances comes better accessibility for those who need it. The widespread access to ChatGBT and many similar AI products, has allowed for adaption to aid people with neurodevelopmental disorders. Specifically, the ability to understand and label tone in writing, identify any missed grammar errors, deciphering shorthand, or even tracking social media trends. An article in the Washington Post discusses how many people are utilizing AI to overcome struggles, “Ross, who has attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and uses they/them pronouns, says they’ve more than doubled their productivity by using AI for almost everything: to create content using specific frameworks, to prepare for tough conversations, to help with project and strategic planning, and to determine impact”, AI has obviously helped them to supplement their skills, and to make their working environment more accessible. ““I’ve figured out a way to mask my neurodivergence,” said Chambers, 40, who has ADHD. “It’s like having an accommodation that’s inexpensive and easy to use””. This expansion of accessibility into areas usually unconsidered by companies helps in the growth and comfortability of everyone. This is a great way to utilize AI in a small, productive manner that does not depend on the accuracy of AI’s current state but instead expands on its machine learning and diagnostic abilities.

Another example of putting emphasis on AI’s powerful machine learning capabilities is utilizing it in the medical field to identify and suggest diagnoses based off of images. This allows for people without access to in-person appointments to get treatment or even expand the database of inflictions to those underrepresented in medical textbooks, such as people of color. There is an active deficit in examples of many dermatology issues on more pigmented skin, which leads to misdiagnosis and underdiagnosis of illness and in infections for people of color. Luckily, there has been work towards AI utilizing not only textbook representation of these inflictions but also pulling images from online resources that individuals have shared to increase knowledge about how different issues are seen on darker colored skin. The Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology reported the statistics in finding accurate disease representation in ‘dark skin images’, or DMIs, throughout various resources. “Of the 15,445 images across all resources, 19.5% were DSIs. Online resources had a greater representation of DSIs (22.1%) compared to printed texts (10.3%). For online resources, VisualDx had a greater representation of DSIs (28.5%) compared to DermNet NZ (2.8%)” AI’s ability to utilize online documents has expanded its pattern recognizing capabilities to more than usually accessed by doctors. This could allow for better diagnoses to be made and for immediate, online, dermatological assistance. “Although the incidence of most skin cancers is lower in individuals with dark skin, these patients often have worse clinical outcomes, including disproportionately higher morbidity and mortality. Consequently, rather than reflecting the incidence of disease in the patient population, educational materials must comprehensively illustrate all pathology in patients of a spectrum of skin tones”, the JAAD reports. Hopefully, by utilizing the opportunity of quick, at-home, and educated help, AI can save lives.

When debating the merits of artificial intelligence, the natural reaction is not to analyze its impact on technological or educational advancements, in my experience it is to resort to fear, implemented by years of science fiction movies regarding technology taking over humanity, think Terminator. Assessing the moral implications of having unlimited, but not verifiably accurate information is time-consuming and inconclusive. Not knowing how AI can be utilized in the wrong hands, whether that be by deep fakes, or its impact on younger generations lives. AI is scary and the way that it has been so quickly discovered and is still rapidly changing, no one can really predict where it will end up or the capabilities it will have. However, commenting on the total social impact cannot be done in a manner right now that is anything other than an opinion. Sure, many of those opinions may lean in an unappealing light, however, the true impact AI has had on every generation has yet to completely unfold. Thus, when analyzing our current situation, the statements that can be made are the ones supported by facts such as the data taken with the increased amount of more accurate diagnostic representation in dermatology with people with more pigmented skin. It is also so obviously beneficial to those who struggle with certain disabilities that AI has proven to be helpful with, such as analyzing tone in text. And even though these cannot be truly weighed against the moral or social impact AI has had and continues to have, because both sides are not completely known, it obviously has positive impacts in some areas, especially those in the technological and medical fields utilizing machine learning. Its ability to expand in this direction, while being monitored and reported on in others, gives me hope that artificial intelligence will have a net positive impact on society.
